How to find an NHS dentist accepting new patients

Demand for NHS dentistry is higher than supply almost everywhere, and lists change daily. Here's a practical way to find a practice that's taking patients — and get told when one near you opens up.

Step 1: Search every practice near your postcode

Start with a search that shows every NHS and private practice near you in one list, sorted by distance. Dentist Search does this from your postcode and lets you filter to NHS-only and accepting-only practices.

Step 2: Check how recent the availability is

Practice lists open and close quickly, so a status that's weeks old may be wrong. Dentist Search refreshes NHS data every morning, then adds recent reports from patients who've just called — so you can see what's actually happening.

Step 3: Call, then report back

Call the nearest practices marked as accepting. If you call somewhere, leave a two-tap report in the app to help the next person.

Step 4: Watch practices and get alerts

If nothing nearby is accepting, add practices to your watch list. You'll get a push notification the moment one changes, plus an optional weekly email digest of openings near you.

If you need urgent dental care

You don't need to be registered with a dentist to get urgent NHS dental treatment. Call NHS 111 or use NHS 111 online, and they can direct you to an urgent dental service. For severe swelling, heavy bleeding or difficulty breathing or swallowing, call 999 or go to A&E.

Know the costs before you book

NHS dental treatment in England is charged in bands, and private prices vary by practice. Dentist Search's cost calculator breaks down typical NHS and private costs so there are no surprises.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I find an NHS dentist?

Many practices have limited NHS capacity and lists open and close often. Searching widely, checking fresh availability and setting alerts gives you the best chance.

Do I have to register with a dentist?

Dental practices don't have catchment areas, so you can contact any practice. Urgent NHS care is available through NHS 111 without being registered.

Is there an app to find an NHS dentist?

Yes — Dentist Search is a free iPhone app that shows NHS and private practices accepting patients near you, with alerts when availability changes.
